Which terrace covering is low-maintenance?

A terrace covering is easy to maintain outdoors when it uses either ceramic patio tiles with a dense surface or water-permeable patio tiles made from PU-bound rubber granules.

The amount of cleaning required depends on the surface texture of the tiles, the joints, the location of the terrace and its drainage. On ceramic patio tiles, dirt generally remains on the surface and can usually be removed by sweeping or washing. Rough or heavily textured surfaces and wide joints retain dirt more readily, increasing the maintenance required. This is particularly apparent with exposed-aggregate paving slabs, natural stone, terracotta and wood tiles.

With patio tiles made from rubber granules, rain washes fine dust and pollen through the water-permeable structure. Leaves, soil and sand can be removed with a broom or hose; for more thorough cleaning, a pressure washer may be used. Water percolates through the patio tiles.

Easy-to-maintain patio tiles are not maintenance-free. Drains, edge areas and open joints should be cleared regularly of dirt and vegetation.
