How long do commercial rubber flooring tiles last?
Commercial rubber flooring tiles, along with rubber mats made from PU-bound rubber granules, typically have a service life of about ten to fifteen years. Actual service life can differ substantially depending on the conditions of use: some surfaces have remained in use for more than twenty years, while others require renewal after only a few years.
This variation in renewal intervals is mainly determined by the type and intensity of use. Friction causes surface wear, while high or sustained compressive loads can affect the material structure. Mechanical loading is generally lower in domestic settings than in commercial use. Weathering also affects service life, particularly UV radiation, temperature fluctuations and frequent freeze-thaw cycles.
Weathering and ageing are also influenced by the type of granulate. An EPDM wearing layer is UV-resistant and, after an initial weathering period, largely colour-stable. ELT granules with pigmented binder become darker over time.
