    Which patio surface lasts the longest?

    A professionally installed patio surface of frost-resistant natural stone has the longest service life.


    Concrete paving slabs and porcelain paving can also provide a long service life, provided that the substrate, bedding, joints and drainage continue to perform over time. Material alone does not determine the durability of a patio: settlement, standing water, frost, unsuitable joints or a defective substructure can make even a resistant surface require repair prematurely.


    For bonded porcelain paving, service life depends particularly heavily on the substrate and correct installation; the same applies to resin-bound aggregate surfacing. Wooden decking and WPC decking are more affected by moisture, UV radiation and temperature fluctuations. The service life of wooden decking depends on the wood species, protective detailing, substructure and maintenance, while that of WPC decking depends on material quality, protective detailing, substructure and maintenance.


    Patio tiles made from polyurethane-bound rubber granules do not achieve the inherent service life of natural stone. They are installed without mortar joints and can be replaced individually, so localised damage can be repaired without renewing the entire patio surface.


    When choosing a patio surface, repairability, maintenance requirements and the cost of later refurbishment should be considered alongside service life. How long wooden decking and WPC decking remain visually presentable also depends on the wood species or material quality, protective detailing, substructure and maintenance. With patio tiles made from polyurethane-bound rubber granules, localised damage can be repaired without renewing the complete patio surface.
