Which room is suitable for a home gym?

Gym equipment flooring should be laid in a dry room with effective ventilation, sufficient space for movement, adequate ceiling height and a load-bearing suspended floor or concrete slab.

Space requirements depend on the equipment and exercises planned. In addition to the equipment footprint, allow sufficient room to move and maintain safe clearances from walls, windows, radiators and other equipment.

Ceiling height must accommodate overhead movements, pull-ups, skipping and jumping.

The suspended floor or concrete slab must safely carry the static loads imposed by training equipment, racks and weights, as well as the dynamic loads arising during training. Where heavy equipment or free weights are involved, a structural engineer should check the load-bearing capacity if there is any doubt.

Effective ventilation allows heat, moisture and odours to escape. Particularly in rooms with limited heating, the floor, walls and ceiling must remain dry.
